Argumentative Speech Freedom of Speech We all know what the general meaning of freedom of speech is. But let me tell you a deeper meaning of freedom of speech. Freedom of speech is the right, guaranteed by the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, to express beliefs and ideas without unwarranted government restriction. Speech is built in to our lives as a way to communicate with others. That’s why I believe everyone has the freedom and right to speak. Some nations still restrict the people’s right to speak. One of them is North Korea. North Korea is one of the 5 remaining countries that adopt the communist ideology. According to Wikipedia, anybody in North Korea who tries to speak to the public about the government will be sent to labor camps and be forced to work there. Worst case scenario, they get executed. North Korea is not the only country who does this. Myanmar, Nepal, and the rest of the communist countries do this as well. I believe this has to stop for all humans have the same rights and none of us are superior to anyone. It’s also a matter of honoring human rights. There has to be steps taken to ensure that freedom of speech is available to everyone. The first major movement in freedom of rights is the creation of the First Amendment. According to Wikipedia, the First Amendment prohibits the making of any law respecting an establishment of religion, impeding the free exercise of religion, abridging the freedom of speech, infringing on the freedom of the press, interfering with the right to peaceably assemble or prohibiting the petitioning for a governmental redress of grievances. It was adopted on December 15 1791 as one of the Ten Amendments. I believe that from that point on, freedom of speech has been more widespread and movements like that make the world a better place. Democratic countries are the perfect examples of a country that honors the freedom of speech. In a democratic country, the people are the rulers, and the freedom of speech is used by the people to make the country better. The freedom of speech has a significant impact in our social life. For example, without the freedom of speech, we wouldn’t be able to object to something that the people think doesn’t seem right. A few months ago, the workers in Jakarta asked for a minimum wage increase because of rising prices on goods. The workers are using their freedom of speech to express their thoughts to the government. The government finally increased the minimum wages. Another example is without freedom of speech, the government would control the people. The government would make rules that doesn’t honor human rights, like North Korea. I’m sure no one wants that to happen. Some might argue that there should be huge limits on freedom of speech. That freedom of speech should be limited to our society only and that freedom of speech does not cover the right to speak about the government. But think about it, if freedom of speech is limited, we won’t be able to change rules that are made by the government. We won’t be able to change what’s wrong with the rules. A good example is the US right now. Recently the US has been discovered to spy on US citizens and other countries through the internet. This was revealed by somebody who works inside that government. If freedom of speech didn’t exist, the US citizens would have never known that their government was spying on them. But because freedom of speech exists, we are able to know. Countries shouldn’t be able to limit our freedom to speech. We know now how important freedom of speech is. How crucial it is for every one of us. We all have the right to know, we all have the right to tell. We all have the right to protest if something is wrong in the government. We might feel offended by something someone says. We might also offend someone by something we say. But the world has decided that freedom of speech is important, and it has been shown by the creation of the First Amendment. No one should be able to restrict our minds and restrict our rights to speech. There has to be steps taken to ensure our freedom to speech. So far it has been good, but we need more progress. We need to speak out our thoughts. So far the US has been the country that pushes freedom of speech the most. We all have to follow their example and push the rights to speech. I wouldn’t even be talking here if freedom of speech didn’t exist.

Sociologist Stanley Cohen (1973) suggests that the media depiction of antisocial behaviour helps to construct what he labels ‘folk devils’. Whilst social scientists Stuart Hall et al (1978) argued that the mediation of disorderly behaviour led to the belief that society was in a ‘crisis’. By using my own examples and illustrations I will compare and contrast these two theories and furthermore for differentiation include a more present-day theory on social disorder through Huesmann et al 2003. Thereby through an examination of mediation (media spin) on disorderly behaviour attempt to define how one part of social order is produced in public spaces. Hall believed that the issue of crime was instrumental in controlling society and that the media constructions â€Å"contributed to a widespread belief that there was a crisis in society† (Making (Social lives, p378). He goes on to infer that media spin is used to distort and divert public attention from the clear problems of social injustice and inequality and that this aids government on social order policies. Evidence for this Law and Order society can be found with the introduction of the SUS (Stop and Search) powers that were used at their height when 1000 youths were stopped and searched in 5 days in what the police called â€Å"Operation Swamp†(bbc. Home, 25th Nov. 1981).well researched This resulted in the escalation of confrontation between the community and the police due to the locals perceiving an inequality and persecution of young blacks and this sparked off the Brixton race riots (1981). The outcome culminated in the renewal of social order with the abolition of the SUS law (1981). However they returned in another form due to 9/11 and 7/7 attacks to combat terrorism in 2007. To  compare and contrast Cohen and Halls views on mass media mediation and how the social order is m aintained through public spaces it will be shown by examining that they have differences and similarities. Where both Cohen and Hall agree with regard to their theories on the issue of mediation (public spaces) is that they both believe that the focus of the mass media places spin on how social and criminal deviants (muggers) are portrayed. Also they both rely on labels to support their social disorder theories i.e. folk devil and muggers and furthermore characterising them as stereotypes. Moreover they continue to agree that the media exaggerates and amplifies and create’ scapegoats’ whose behaviours good example of compare and contrast are demonised with resulting effect on social order of creating ‘moral panic’ on the one hand and a sense of ‘crisis in society’ on the other. Where they greatly disagree is on the root causes of moral panics and social crisis in that Cohen with very little supporting evidence, believed cultural anxiety was to blame (Making Social Lives, Table 1, p383,). Whilst Hall thought that the blame led elsewhere with his inference to social inequality and racism and that the media served the state in diverting attention away from these genuine social problems (ibid).good In contrast to both Cohen and Hall’s views on the mediation of ‘social disorder’ and the foundation of their theories on moral panic and society in crisis there is a view that has an alternative reason as to why and how the media can play a significant role in shaping social order in public spaces. This alternative view comes from the analysis of a longitudinal study (Making Social Lives, p381) by Huesmann et al on media effects, and in particularly how Huesmann and his team found a correlation between 557 children and the watching of violence on TV and a subsequent increase in propensity for aggressive behaviour in 398 of these same studied people. Therefore Huesmann et al. (2003) reached the conclusion on disorderly behaviour that there is a direct effect of media portrayal of violence. From this you can argue that in Huesmann’s view, media and mediation through public space in this case TV. can have a major negative role in the shaping of social order in society, by desensitising and normalising disorderly behaviour. Although there is no real causation evidence for these claims in Huesmann’s study and that the conclusion drawn on the media impact of television violence a chimera of other social factors very good expand on this a little. Thereby through  the examination of Cohen/Halls theories on mediation (media spin) on disorderly behaviour the following can be gleaned with regard to how one part of social order is produced in public spaces. Established norms of behaviour are created and exist in society supported by mass media and this sometimes leads to an increase in social pressure which is built up with a resulting increase in policing and law legislation (SUS laws). These societal norms are reinforced by media scapegoating of social and criminal deviants, Cohen’s ‘folk devils’ and Halls ‘muggers’. Although there are others (Huesmann et al) who believe that the shaping of social order in society is more directly influenced by TV violence alone. The methodology utilised in this essay was to shed light on the making of social order in public spaces through looking at two main theories on disorderly behaviour. And it has highlighted in my view that quite possibly genuine social problems and solutions are obscured by mediation resulting in legislation that deals with only the symptoms not the causes â€Å"The media’s the most powerful entity on earth. Index Funds and Mutual Funds

Whether money is be the root cause of evil or not, I don†t know. What I do know it that since the dawn of man, the concept of currency had been intimately intertwined with human society. It helps form the basis of governments, and most laws. The world stock market is where these global force that powers our atomic age society merges into a complex matrix of financial void; opportunity in it†s most complex form. The raw power of the stock market that can either bring a man to rapid success, or completely ruin him. Two of the prominent worlds of the stock market are the topic for this research paper: Index Funds and regular mutual funds. To my horror, these two terms are incredibly vague words and each have many different parts with their own specific characteristics. I will be comparing and contrasting the over shared characteristics of both kinds of stock market investing. Let us begin by explaining what both these terms actually mean. Indexing, in its simplest form, means buying all of the stocks, bonds or other instrument of a market, or asset class, instead of trying to pick winners and losers. Index investors are content with the average performance of a market. When they invest, they buy all an amount of all the stocks within the index with the knowledge that some individual stocks will gain and some will lose. The hope and assumption is when investing in index funds, that the overall net change of all the stocks in the index average out to a gain. This is usually the case as the normal trend for a market is to gradually climb. Index investors are skeptical that on average a money manager can improve on the average performance without raising risk. They are even more skeptical after fees are subtracted. The best known index, the Standard & Poor's 500 (S&P 500), is a collection of the top 500 major US stocks. However there are dozens of others, including the Euro Top 100, the largest European stocks; EAFE, a broad global index of companies from numerous countries; and the Lehman Brothers Aggregate Bond Index, a collection of government and commercial bonds. Other names for index investing include â€Å"asset class investing† and â€Å"passive investing.† As the name suggests, passive investing is basically a no brainier. The philosophy is not to worry about what individual stocks will gain or lose but to place your risks on the market as a whole. An asset class is simply a category of investment, such as stocks or bonds. No surprises – You instantly know whether your gaining or losing as your profits are based on the overall conditions of the market, or at least the section of the market you invested in. With an actively managed mutual fund investment, you may not know until the very end that the fund manager just lost you or gained you a great deal of free money. Low maintenance – No thinking required. In this sense its kinda like a slot machine just on a much larger scale and on a slot machine†¦ you never win. There is no debating over which stocks to buy, for how long to keep them. Your money stays put; you always know where it is unlike mutual funds where its always being shuffled around. Low Taxes – Taxes on distributions among shareholders is significantly less with index funds as opposed to mutual funds. This saves time and money. Low Expenses – Stock managers charge money. The better they are, the more they charge which boils down to the more you make, the more is taken out of you profit. The average general stock fund takes 1.5% of your assets each year for expenses. Some funds charge much more. The average index fund charges only 0.46%, which means more of your money, is left behind. Lower risk – As you invest in an index, your stocks are generalized throughout the market. This diversification holds a lower risk then picking out individual stocks yourself. Average returns – Investing in an index fund means you'll never beat the market. You'll never even match it, since fund expenses will knock a little off your returns. And even though most actively managed mutual funds don't beat the market over time, a few managers have consistently posted outstanding performances. No downside protection – Mutual fund managers often increase their holdings of bonds and cash if they think the market is poised to fall. Index funds offer no such safeguards: If the market plunges, you'll go down with it. That's why most financial planners say index funds are best suited for long-term investors who can ride out dips in the market. High minimums – While index funds generally have low expenses, you may need a lot of money to get started. For example the Vanguard fund requires an initial investment of $3,000 to go into one of its popular index funds; other funds require $1,000 to $5,000. And once you're in, it might be expensive to get out: Many index funds charge a fee to investors who don't hold onto their shares at least a year, or more. No fun – Like I said, it†s a no-brainer. Which means you sit and watch your money travel up and down a little red line on you television screen while watching CSPAN. Not as exciting as getting the newspaper the next day and finding out your fund just quintupled. A mutual fund is a company that combines, or pools, investors' money and, generally, purchases stocks and/or bonds. Ideally, a fund's size and efficiency, combined with experienced management, provide advantages for investors that include diversification, expert stock and bond selection, low costs, and convenience. In terms of legal structure, a mutual fund is a corporation that receives preferential tax treatment under the U.S. Internal Revenue Code. The most common type of mutual fund, called an open-end fund, allows investors to buy and sell stock in it on an ongoing basis. The mutual fund issues shares of stock to investors in exchange for cash. However, unlike most cooperations do, mutual funds don†t issue a set amount of shares; new shares are issued as each new investment is made. Investors thus become part owners of the fund itself, and thereby the assets of the fund. The fund, in turn, uses investors' cash to purchase securities, such as stocks and bonds. This makes up the majority of the assets that the fund makes for itself. There are two main types of mutual funds, a load and no-load fund. Basically speaking, a load fund is one that has a sales charge, and a no-load does not. Those that do have sales charges simply add them on to the net asset value of the fund, thus coming up with a new, higher offering price per share. The underlying values of the fund†s shares do not change. An investor selling shares will still receive only the net asset value. A no-load fund is simpler. The net asset value is used for both the purchase price and the selling price. Therefore, the two prices are always the same. Diversification – As opposed to independent stock investing. Your money is more diversified but not as Cost – Again, as opposed to individual investing. Funds usually have trading cost discounts and can spread internal cost over the large shareholder base. Professional Management – You have a professional fund manager who watches the stock and decides where it should go and when it should go there. Tax planning difficult – because the timing of taxable distribution is uncertain. You cannot choose the sale dates for yourself and therefore there is much uncertainty on when your taxable distributions are made. Uncertainty – For competitive reasons with other mutual funds, the funds usually don†t disclose the report of a transaction until after its been made. This leaves you constantly one step behind in knowing where you money is. Manager changes – A fund can all of a sudden change a manager which you will not find out about in a timely manner. You don†t know who†s handling your money and have little control over it yourself.

From the time they are infants, the play is an activity that they engage in to learn about their world. As they grow older, they discover more about the world around them through play. They use their senses to explore objects and learn about concepts such as of cause and effects when they manipulate objects. Macintyre asserts that young children learn better in play-like settings. Concepts are retained better when learned in an easy, relaxed and fun atmosphere that does not pressure children to perform in ways that stress them to achieve. Macintyre continues to endorse the value of play in all the developmental areas of children. Play’s rich and varied meanings have resulted in theorists being unable to come up with a single standard definition. Isaacs was one of the first known theorists to define play as the work of the child whereas more recently Bruce regards play as â€Å"the highest form of learning in early childhood†. Moyles comments on how the play is valuable as an excellent learning medium and educators who attempt to define play describe similar features such as enjoyment, spontaneity and active engagement. We are a compassionate team pod and have to be when dealing with people. I naturally sit in a democratic leadership model and have strengths which sit in this style, I am a motivated, supportive, calm self confident leader. I listen and communicate well using positive banter and body language. I will encourage idea’s from my team and I give praise and recognition on a good job done. I can adapt well to change and will try new things. Sometimes faced with office culture (tickle tackle) I can face this head on and any problems within my team are ironed out as soon as they occur. I can read a persons personality and situation well and will deal with whatever happens in an appropriate way. To support my theory on my democratic leadership style I carried out a questionnaire with my team please see appendix 1 attached. Our team constantly bring new ideas to the table and our business is in growth and in order to meet this growth we hold monthly meetings. These meetings have advantages and are interactive. They are great for instant feedback, the same information is outlined at the same time making it fair and avoids Chinese whispers. You can get an instant verification of understanding with a clear action plan in place before leaving the meeting and as we are currently looking at improving our procedures to meet business demands the meeting is a priceless tool! Effective Communication in the Workplace Communication is an important aspect of any work place. It can consist of verbal and nonverbal messages. Effective communication, especially in the field of computer technology, is essential to work place productivity. Communication is considered to be effective when both parties involved have the same understanding of the message being sent. Effective Communication doesn’t have to be a long, drawn out affair or an elaborate meeting. It can be short and simple; precise and to the point. It can be a manager walking down sending a short email to one of his assistants to request an update on the necessary protocols for a new system. Another example of effective communication could be a coworker reminding another coworker of a mandatory section meeting at 2:00 P.M. later the same afternoon. Neither of these exchanges took a long time, but they are direct and to the point. This is what makes for effective communication. (McIntosh, 2008) Verbal messages are one form of communication. Verbal messages consist of words spoken between two or more people. They can take place face to face or via the telephone or other electronic medium like video conferencing. Interpersonal communication makes up the majority of your every-day communication. This includes conversations with your family, friends, and coworkers. (Wood, 2014) One thing to remain aware of in your verbal messages is the clarity and ambiguity. A lot of problems in communication stem from simple misunderstandings. To avoid this, we must make a conscious effort to refrain from using ambiguous language in our conversations. Focusing on clarity and ambiguity reminds me of a time when I was in the military. In 1979, I was stationed in a remote location in Greece. I often worked with Greek personnel to accomplish daily jobs. During this time, I became very familiar with the saying â€Å"always tomorrow.† I found out early during my stay in Greece that the Greek work for tomorrow is pronounced, â€Å"av-iee-o†. When requests were made of our Greek counterparts, their answer would always be â€Å"av-iee-o†, meaning tomorrow. When the next day came, the work was expected to be completed. When the work was not received, a follow up would be made and the answer again was simply, tomorrow. I later found out that when requests were made, a specific time and date needed to be stipulated because â€Å"tomorrow† from my Greek counterparts equated to whenever they were finished. I truly found out the meaning of â€Å"always tomorrow† the hard way. After learning this, every request was given with an absolute time and date for expected completion. This scenario is not subject to just my experiences in the military. Misunderstandings like this can be avoided by utilizing as much clarity in your communication as possible. Other issues with clarity can stem from using slang and jargon. Using slang can be a slippery slope. While it may be perfectly fine for use with your friends and family in a less formal setting, it can leave your bosses and clientele with a negative impression of your competence. It can also be confusing if not everyone understands your slang. Jargon, on the other hand is more technical is sort of short-hand and can be quite useful on the job. Like slang, however, it can be confusing to people outside of your company or industry. So, it is not advisable to use jargon too much in formal communications, especially communications with clients or people from other industries. Keeping your communication clear, but concise can help avoid giving ambiguous statements that leads to confusion and misunderstandings. (Flood, 2008) Words can be an effective tool in moving people’s emotions. They can be used to motivate individuals to work harder. Conversely, they can evoke feelings of anger and provoke a defensive stance from the recipient. For this reason, another characteristic of verbal messages to avoid is using inflammatory language. â€Å"Inflammatory language is one of the most common causes of conflict escalation.† (Askin, 2003) The fact that words can evoke such negative feelings is enough of a reason to try to avoid the use of inflammatory language. It is obvious you should avoid words that promote negative feelings of race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, and more. Trigger words are so inflammatory that they can instantly invoke a severe emotional response. It is important to realize how inflammatory they can be. What might seem to be simple and innocent to you could in fact be a trigger word to someone else. You should first accept that you have trigger words of your own and learn to be aware of them. Then you can start to be more aware of the fact that others will have a reaction to what you say, be it negative or positive. What you say is not the only thing that matters in communication. You must also be aware of how you say it. Nonverbal communication includes the tone you use, your facial expressions, gestures, body language and more to help convey your messages and give them a deeper meaning. (Wood, 2014) It is all the ways you express yourself without actually using words. Nonverbal messages are extremely important, especially in work place communication. The way you say the words you use to communicate, your body language and gestures, even your posture can all contradict what you are actually saying. Some research has shown that people tend to believe the nonverbal cues displayed when someone’s verbal and nonverbal communication are not in sync. Friedrich Nietzsche once stated, â€Å"All credibility, all good conscience, all evidence of truth come only from the senses.† (Smith, 2013) This can be applied to the importance of nonverbal communication. The overall morale of an office can have a great impact on its productivity. Nonverbal messages can have a significant impact on the morale. For instance, an employee gives a presentation to their manager. Throughout the presentation, the employee sees the manager yawning and fidgeting a lot. One thing this employee might think is that the manager is not interested in the presentation at all. This can cause the employee to lose some of their â€Å"zeal† for working there and lower their morale. With lowered morale, the employee’s production begins to slip over time. (Ray, n.d.) One of the â€Å"problems† with nonverbal behavior is that it can be somewhat ambiguous. It is easy to interpret someone’s body language the wrong way. For instance, in the example above, the employee could have mistaken the manager’s yawning as showing their lack of interest in the topic. However, the yawning could just as easily been caused by a lack of sleep the night before. The constant fidgeting could have been due to drinking too much coffee before the meeting to compensate for a lack of sleep. (Adler, 2014) Even though nonverbal communication can be easily misinterpreted, it is still important to be careful of the images you convey. Even though what you say through verbal communication is still very important, how you say it can determine how much your audience retains. Dustin York is an assistant professor at Maryville University. He conducted an experiment to determine how much of a factor nonverbal communication really played in the retention of information from presentations. During his experiment, he used 4 university classes totaling 80 students. Each of the classes had a guest lecturer giving the exact lecture. The wording and information was all the same, but each guess was instructed to vary their nonverbal cues throughout the lecture. Two lectures were instructed to use effective nonverbal communication in the presentations, while the other two were instructed to use poor nonverbal communication. The students were all given the exact same test after the lectures. York found that the students attending the lectures with effective nonverbal communication scored approximately 30% higher than students of the other lectures. (York, 2013) Effective communication requires both verbal and nonverbal communication to work together. It has been determined that nonverbal communication works with verbal communication to either reiterate the message, contradict the message, emphasize the message, or complement the message. You should be careful not to use nonverbal cues to contradict the message too much or you can appear to be untrustworthy. (Wood, 2014) Effective communication is a vital key to any successful workplace. In the computer technology field, coworkers rely on each other to relay accurate information. In dealing with clients, it is important to be able to communicate with them effectively. You must remember to speak clear and concise messages. This will allow you to improve your clarity and reduce any ambiguities. You must also be careful of what you say. Stay away from slang, jargon and inflammatory words, especially trigger words so that your audience can remain receptive to your message. Just as important, if not more, be cognizant of the nonverbal messages that you send. While your verbal messages are important, you must always be aware of the effect that your nonverbal cues add to them. By this way BSRM attract new customers and try to beat their competitors. At present everyone using high quality steel bar for the construction purposes. BSRM Xtream 500W bars make a tremendous change in Bangladeshi steel sector and make BSRM the leader in steel industry. Q.2. Review the existing business plan of the chosen company and review the competitive position and current business strategy. Current Business Strategy of BSRM BSRM has developed its strategy for the future growth of the company. By applying the market oriented strategy BSRM try to attract more customers. At present, BSRM has launched new products in the market named BSRM Xtreme 500W. The company already booked many construction material supply orders from the corporate customers. Price reduction strategy is another strategy they have already started to apply. The company has already appointed more than 100 dealers and agents all over the country to supply their products and services to their customers. BSRM earned net profit of Tk. 574.08 million in 2009. Gross Profit also increases Tk. 271,922,738 from the previous year. So it shows the high market share and high growth rate. The different stages of an industry life cycle are: introduction, growth, maturity, and decline. Sales normally start gradually at the introduction stage and then lift-off continuously throughout the growth period. After the maturity stage, sales then start a regular decline. Basically, profits usually running to rise during the life cycle. An industry start its journey or beginning from the introduction phase of the life cycle. Perhaps a fresh and unique product offering has been developed and patented, thus beginning a new industry. Significant amount of capital required in the growth stage of an industry like the introduction stage. The industry is experiencing more product standardization at this stage. When the industry begins its expansion into maturity stage the curve looks flat. This indicates slow growth of the industry. Some experts place another stage between growth and maturity, called expansion. Declines are almost expected in an industry. If product improvement has not kept speed with other competing products and if new innovations or technological changes have caused the industry to become obsolete, sales suffer and the life cycle experiences a decline. In this stage, sales are falling at very fast rate. According to the figure 2.2 of industry life cycle, the competitive position of BSRM is in maturity stage. BSRM has already passed its introduction and growth level. Now it has a brand name and value in Bangladeshi steel market. BSRM has very strong customer backup. Now in this mature stage, it has to introduce new strategy to increase its growth. Q.3. Identify and evaluation of alternative strategies that would consist of companys goals and objectives and select an appropriate future new strategy. According to the previous analysis of the existing position of BSRM I can suggest a possible alternative strategy under ANSOFF matrix. ANSOFF matrix is a popular method among the organizations business practices. ANSOFF matrix (Product market expansion grid) represents four potential options which are shown in the figure below. This strategy may require the development of new competencies and requires the business to develop modified products which can appeal to existing markets. Diversification Diversification is the name given to the growth strategy where a business markets new products in new markets. This is an inherently more risk strategy because the business is moving into markets in which it has little or no experience. Here two alternative strategies I can mention. They are Market development and product development. Let us evaluate both strategies related to the BSRM. Market Development Suitability BSRM can increase their market coverage through the market development strategy. By applying market development BSRM can increase its sales growth rate. If they increase their sales obviously they can profit. There are some areas in Bangladesh which are in under development process. Many constructions activities are running all over the country. So, it can be a good chance for BSRM to increase their market growth. According to BSRMs vision and mission statement it has mentioned to provide high quality steel products to the customer and become market leader in steel industry sector. Market development can support BSRM to achieve their mission and vision. So this is a suitable strategy to BSRM. Acceptability BSRM is the leading steel industry in Bangladesh and they have brand name. People undoubtedly believe their products. BSRM always honestly work for their customers, shareholders. So, in capital market it has a positive reaction. Currently government spending large amount of money in the industry sector for the development of current economical condition. So, this is an acceptable strategy. Feasibility According to the cash flow statement BSRM has good financial ability in market. In the date of 31st March, 2008 BSRMs share money deposit was BDT 6,015,000 and Liability against import was BDT 169,597,618. It has the largest work force and experience management team. BSRM has good annual balance and cash flow statement. Their stock market shares are also strong valued. BSRM has financial capability to research on the market. So this strategy is also feasible. Product development Suitability Bangladesh Steel Re-Rolling Mills Ltd. currently produces steel related products and services. It has good market share as mentioned. BSRM can use product development strategy for their market growth. Peoples experience and perceptions are always changing. So customers prefer to experience new product. Generally they like new products with high value and low price. BSRM can produce new products and can improve their customer relation facilities. Also they can improve their current product by using new technological instruments and machines. It has already create and maintain a well known brand name so, that will help to marketing the new product. Also BSRM created brand and customer loyalty so this strategy is appropriate to BSRM. Acceptability Using the industry life cycle analysis it is clear that BSRM coming under the maturity stage. Therefore, product development is acceptable in this stage. It will help to achieve the profit growth. Through the product development it can ensure the profit and success. In the steel business field changes are important to progress in the market. For an example TESCO has introduced TESCO lemon drinks, TESCO sugar, etc. Introduce lemon drinks and sugar is product development strategy for the company. It is not a completely new product it is a modified product. By Using these types of strategy TESCO try to increase their market growth. So this strategy is also acceptable for BSRM. Feasibility Through the financial statement BSRM has established their financial resource. They have strong financial background and stability in the market. Optimum level of financial resources helps BSRM to support the product development strategy. As a steel industry BSRM has the financial, human, technology and physical resource. Favourable and good cash flow statement shown in the financial statement. Therefore this strategy is also feasible to Sri Lanka Telecom. According to the evaluation of the alternative strategy analysis I can recommend that product development strategy is the most suitable strategy than the market development. There are many opportunities for BSRM to enter into the new market. BSRM already has the brand name. So it is the chance for BSRM to implement the product development strategy. Q.4. Construct a new suitable structure for a strategy plan ensuring the participation of all stakeholders. New Organizational Structure Figure 4.1: Proposed New Organizational Structure of BSRM Under the every divisional CEO the structure will be same for GM to the bottom line. It is a common practice that when an organization changes their strategy it requires to change of the organizational structure. There are four major types of organizational structure used which are divisional structure, functional structure, matrix structure, strategic business unit structure. According to the new strategy of BSRM I have proposed a new organizational structure. The new structure is the divisional form of organizational structure. Product development is the new strategy I have recommended for BSRM. So, I have restructured the existing structure. I have added six divisional CEO for the company according to my new strategy product development. One CEO cannot control all of the part of Bangladesh so I have introduced the others. I have included another manager who is product research and development manager under the Sr. Manager Marketing Sales. In this structure product research and development manager is an important post. His job will be the product research and find out the market opportunity which BSRM can implement into their product development strategy. Q.5. Analyse how you would plan for the implementation of strategy in the perspective of following issue. Strategic Plan Strategic plan is a set of statements describing the purpose and ethical conduct for an organization together with the specific strategies designed to achieve the targets set for each of these. The strategic plan can be arranged by analysing the internal and external factors which have control over the company. There are some major points involved in strategic planning. They are as follows:- Defining corporate mission Setting corporate objectives and goals Designing the business portfolio Designing the key business unit strategy Functional plan. BSRM strategy plans accordingly the above steps. Corporate mission Become a market leader of Bangladesh in steel industry sector by providing a good and high quality products and services. Corporate objectives Maintain leadership position in the steel industry sector. Provide high quality products and services with affordable price. Achieving the target profit growth Increase the market share. Business portfolio BSRM produce steel related products such as: Deformed Bar Xtreme 500W, Grade-75 Wires, Angles, Channels, Spring Steel Flats, Low Carbon Wire Rods, etc. Business unit strategy To achieve its objectives product development is the BSRMs business unit strategy. Functional strategy To support the business strategy, BSRM has developed many promotional strategies. BSRM select the Chittagong and Dhaka division to increase its market area. Strategy can be reach through cost reduction, improved quality of product and services, through the development of customer preference and the raise of competitive leverage (Henry et al, 2003). Resource Requirements The resources are essential requirement to implement the strategy of the business. For the implementation of strategy there are four mail resources required. They are financial resources, physical resources, human resources and technological resources. Through the financial statement BSRM has established their financial resource. They have strong financial background and stability in the market. Technological resource is very much related to the steel industry sector. In 2008 a state-of-the-art DANIELI built rolling mill BSRM Steels for manufacture the highest grade bar available in Bangladesh. So BSRM adopt new technology to deliver good and quality products to his customer. BSRM has appointed PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) one of the largest and reputed management consultancy firms in the world with the aim of strengthening human resource management. BSRM has highly skilled labours and also has physical resources to implement the strategy. BSRM needs to acquire these resources effectively to support their objectives goals. Targets and timescales Timescale is one of the main facts for the implementation of strategy. If time target is fixed then the strategy control will be easy. BSRM always try to set a target timescales for the implementation of their strategy. By following the new strategy, BSRM has set a five years timescale to achieve their corporate objectives. The company has to do some research into the market condition and has to improve technical and distribution side. So it will take 5 years time period to achieve BSRMs new strategy.

Postman: Rant or Reason? In his novel, "Amusing Ourselves to Death", author Neil Postman describes to the reader, in detail, the immediate and future dangers of television. The arguement starts out in a logical manner, explaining first the differences between today's media-driven society, and yesterday's "typographic America". Postman goes on to discuss in the second half of his book the effects of today's media, politics on television, religion on television, and finally televised educational programs. All, he says, are making a detrimental imprint on our society, its values, and its standards. Postman explains that the media consists of "fragment[s] of news" (100), and politics are merely a fashion show. Although Postman's arguments regarding the brevity of the American attention span and the impotence of today's mass media are logical, his opinion of television's inability to educate is severely overstated. Neil Postman is right on the mark when he states that television is having an overall negative effect on our society: It promotes short attention spans. Postman takes as example for this argument the seven famous debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas. In that time, Postman explains, audiences would "cheerfully accomodate themselves to seven hours of oratory" (44). This is a concept entirely unknown to today's society. In no stretch of the imagination would a sizeable crowd possibly willingly "subject" themselves to such a lengthy activity. The reason for this anomaly is television. A brief peek at any private television broadcasting station will show the reason: We're having entertainment fed to us in tiny portions. In his novel, Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck deals with loneliness by looking for comfort in a friend, but settling for the attentive ear of a stranger. Although they seem at ease and friendly on the surface, a deep sense of loneliness lingers in the hearts of Crooks, George, and Curley's wife, to which they are desperate to find an escape from to cope with their seclusion from the rest of society. Crooks, a lively, sharp-witted, black stablehand, who takes his name from his crooked back, leads a lonely life. He lives according to the rule that no black man is allowed to enter a white man's home. Crooks’ loneliness is a result of rejection from everyone else on the ranch. He is forced to live alone in a barn, where he lives his life in isolation because of his colour, which was an issue in those days. When Lennie visits him in the room, Crooks' reactions reveal the fact that he is lonely. As a black man with a physical handicap, Crooks is forced to live on the border of ranch life. He is not even allowed to enter the white men's bunkhouse, or join them in a game of cards. His resentment typically comes out through his bitter, sad, and touching vulnerability, as he tells Lennie: â€Å"†¦A guy needs somebody to be nea... ...ch seems to disappear when narrating the story of the farm to Lennie.
